Top Tips for Passive Job Seekers

Top Tips for Passive Job SeekersTop Tips for Passive Job SeekersEven if you love your job and dont want to even think about looking for a new position, and even better, if youre lucky enough to have a job you dont want to quit, you should always be at least somewhat prepared to move on. Thats because companies can behave in unexpected ways. Your employer may reorganize its structure or lay-off workers for financial reasons. Management can shift, and along with it, responsibilities for employees. From one day to the next, you could get a new boss who isnt as great to work for as your old supervisor. Or, your personal circumstances could change and you may need to seek new employment. There are also valid reasons that it can make sense toquit a job you love. So, even if you are happy with your current role, its a good idea to engage in passive job search. Find out how to do so, along with discovering the difference between an active and passive job hund. Active vs. Passive Job Search ing Active job searchThis scenario occurs when someone currently needs a new job. Active job seekers post theirresumeon job boards and search and apply for jobs. In addition, job seekers who are actively seeking employment use LinkedIn, social networking sites, and apps to expedite their search for a new position. Active job seekers also network, attend job fairs and industry events, and contact connections, friends, and relatives about potential job opportunities. An active job seeker may also contact a recruiting agency or send letters of interest to specific employers. Passive job searchThis situation occurs when someone who is currently employed is open to hearing about new career opportunities but does not actively seek out and apply to specific positions. Rather than searching and applying for jobs as an active job seeker does, a passive job seeker waits for employers to reach out with opportunities. Passive job seekers may (and should) keep their resume and LinkedIn profile u p-to-date. They may also engage in casual networking with colleagues and friends at other companies and set up job alerts and accounts on job search websites.Even if youre not actively job searching, there are things you can do now to make your next job change easier. Why Its Important to Be Prepared to Job Search Its a good model to follow because you will be prepared to job hunt at any given moment. Your resume and social media presence will be up-to-date if youre engaged in a passive job search. Plus, youll have a sense of the opportunities and salary available within your industry from alerts and casual browsing on job boards. If your circumstances change, your passive job search will be able to quickly and easily transform into a more active one. Top 10 Tips for Passive Job Seekers Passive job seekers who invest a little time in staying job search ready will save a lot of time (and stress) getting up to speed when they need to job search. Here are tips for passive job s eekers. 1. Be an Active LinkedIn UserBuild arobust LinkedIn profileincluding education, experience, volunteering, skills, certifications, and associations, etc. Your LinkedIn Profile is the online version of your resume, so be sure to proofread it carefully. Once your Profile is set, connect with everyone you know. The operative word is know - dont connect with random people because they arent going to be in a position to help you. Join relevantLinkedIn groups. There are job search groups, company groups, alumni groups, college groups, and networking groups. Groups are a good source for networking contacts, job search advice, and job listings. Since youre not actively job searching, set email notifications to a weekly digest so you arent buried in messages. 2. Write RecommendationsWrite LinkedIn recommendations for some of your connections. In return, youll get a recommendation back from at least some of the people you provide a reference for. Those recommendations show on your Prof ile and are a visible reference for potential employers. 3. Tap Into Social NetworkingDont stop with LinkedIn. facebook inc is a personal networking site, but can also be helpful for keeping in touch with former colleagues. Set up Twitter and Google accounts as well to expand your base of connections. Heres how to use social networking for career purposes FacebookGoogleTwitter The stronger your social presence, the more likely you are to be tapped by companies usingsocial recruitingto find candidates for employment. 4. Build a Career NetworkYou dont have to spend a lot of time networking, but do take the time to add connections to your network on a regular basis. The bigger your network, the more opportunities youll have when youre job searching. 5. Stay Connected to Your NetworkDont build a network and forget about it. Its important for your connections to know you are there. Post status updates on Facebook, tweet now and then, and post interesting links to your social networking p ages. If you have a blog thats appropriate for professional connections to read, feed it to your social networking pages. That way your pages will be current without you having to do much work. Once a week, email or send a LinkedIn or Facebook message to a few connections to ask how they are doing. Staying in touch reminds your connections of who you are and shows that you care about how they are doing. If youre interested and engaged, your contacts will be more likely to give you help if and when you need it. With the connections you are friendly enough to meet in-person, have a cup of coffee or lunch once in a while. 6. Check Out CompaniesDo you have a company you would love to work for if the perfect job came along? Have alist of target companies readyand check out the company website every once in a while to read the latest news and see what jobs are available. 7. Check Job ListingsOnce a week spend a few minutes using ajob search engineto run a few job searches using your skill s, job title, and/or the location where you would like to work. Youll see, at a glance, a list of open jobs that match your background. 8. Update Your ResumeHave an updatedresumeready to go. Each time you change jobs or your educational status changes, update your resume. This way, youll always have a current copy of your resume to use, if need be. Write acover letterdraft for a job that is a close match to your expertise. Youll have a template ready to customize when you are ready to apply for jobs. 9. Be bewerbereinstellungsgesprch ReadyDont use up all your accrued vacation orpersonal leavetime unless you have to. Keep some in reserve, so you have time to interview if an opportunity thats too good to pass up comes along. Have aninterview outfitready to go so you dont have to scramble to find something to wear at the last minute. Also, have a list ofemployment referencesready. Some companies require references along with a resume and cover letter as part of the application process. 10. Start OverEvery few weeks go through these steps to make sure that your passive job search techniques are working. Is your LinkedIn networking growing? Are you remembering to reach out to your connections? Do you have a sense of what jobs you qualify for and what jobs are available? On a related note, are your skills and certifications current so youre qualified for positions of interest? Are you ready to interview if you get an invitation from an employer? The more prepared you are to job search, in advance, the easier it will be to start a job hunt and find a new job fast if you need to.

These Resume Tricks Dont Work

These Resume Tricks Dont WorkThese Resume Tricks Dont WorkResume Tricks That Dont WorkLike a fine wine, a good resume takes time and care. There is a lot of content out there that will claim to solve your resume woes. The truth is, there is no quick fix for a resume in need, and you should steer clear of anyone who claims otherwise. With an average of 250 applications received per open role, hiring managers have seen countless resumes and have a keen eye for the sneaky secrets applicants may use to try to slide through. If youre thinking of trying one of these resume tricks, you may want to think again.Visual distractionsWhile a strong template can definitely grab attention and help you stand out, be very discerning when it comes to visual elements that pop. This goes for loud colors, graphics, and charts. Unless you are in a field like graphic design, subtlety will be the name of the game. And remember, elaborate formatting can often render your resume unreadable by applicant tracking systems. It should also be noted that including a headshot on your resume is a practice of the past. Doing so can open the door to many types of discrimination, and employers may reject your CV immediately just to prevent potential accusations.Keyword overloadAdding a keyword section to highlight your specific skill set is a great way to ensure that your resume will make it past an ATS it can also make sure that a hiring manager can easily locate the required skills for the role on your CV. A bad idea, however, is adding a keyword section so expansive that it attempts to veil a thin work history. Hiring managers can see through this easily. After all, it doesnt matter how many keywords and proficiencies you include in your resume if you dont have the accomplishments (with evidence) to back them up.LengthThis failed resume trick is especially relevant for mid- and senior-level professionals. If your strategy is to wow hiring managers with your full career history, you may want to ret hink your approach. One of the fruchtwein common resume mistakes job seekers make is believing that length denotes ability. However, while you may have over 20 years of experience, a hiring manager is not going to be interested in the day-to-day responsibilities of your entry-level role. The appropriate length of your resume is dependent on where you are in your career, but the standard is two pages. Overall, being brief and selective about the experience you include will ensure readability and demonstrate that you know what accomplishments are most important for the role youre applying to.Personal informationAny personal information aside from your contact information (read email, phone number, LinkedIn URL, and city and state of residence) has no place on a modern resume. Details about interests and hobbies, family life, or colorful jokes will not entertain or delight a hiring manager, nor will these elements provide a better understanding of your personality in a way that is valua ble to the hiring process. Venturing into the area of creative writing can be risky and, if at all, should be contained to a cover letter.Click on the following link for more resume-writing tips.Does your current resume employ any of these shortcuts? Boosting Social Security Retirement Benefits for Women

Boosting Social Security Retirement Benefits for Women Boosting Social Security Retirement Benefits for Women Most people eagerly look forward to the day when they can get out of the rat race and begin enjoying their retirement years, including millions of working women who are nearing retirement age across the U.S. But too many women are leaving big money on the table in order to do so, according to recent research. Women and Retirement- Numbers and Statistics According to the Social Security Administration, more women collected Social Security benefits than men in 2017, the most recent year for which comprehensive statistics are available. The ratio was 55% for women as opposed to 45% for men, but this included adults of all ages and all Social Security benefits, not just retirement benefits. And approximately 12% of the women were receiving survivor benefits. The economy can have a significant effect on when both men and women retire. The Social Security Administration indicates that 36.3% of women claimed benefits at age 62 in 2007, and this increased to 38.9% in just two years when America was in the throes of the recession in 2009. A woman is generally eligible for either her own full Social Security benefits or half her spouses benefits, whichever is greater, when she reaches full retirement age. If she claims benefits early at age 62, she only gets 73.3% of her benefits and a paltry 34.2% of her spouse’s benefits, according to the Social Security Administration. Too Many Women Live Without   Men generally have some other form of income in addition to Social Security, but women are five times more likely to survive on Social Security benefits alone. Woman are often forced to take part-time jobs or rely on their children to make ends meet. These factors are changing somewhat as a new generation of women is staying employed for longer periods of time and earning more than their spouses. But many older women simply do without. Housing used to be a staple of a retirement plan, but tax hikes have become so expensive in many areas that retirees can no longer afford to stay in the homes they worked so hard to buy. Many are additionally faced with health issues that tap out resources in mere months, rather than the years theyd planned on living in retirement. How to Get More From Your Retirement Benefits Financial experts advise two strategies for women who want to live better when they reach retirement.Start a retirement fund as soon as possible while youre still employed. Put away as many pre-tax dollars as possible in a conservative investment. A woman can easily accrue around $1 million in tax-sheltered retirement savings by the age of 70 if she begins saving $100 a month in a retirement fund starting at the age of 35.Financial experts recommend holding off on collecting Social Security benefits until well after full retirement age. A woman can earn up to an 8% delayed retirement credit that can increase her benefits by as much as 32% if she waits until age 70. This doesn’t necessarily mean that she has to stop working or live without. Women can tap into their other forms of savings, reverse mortgages, and financial investments until this time.

Joe Girardi From Engineer to Yankees Manager

Joe Girardi From Engineer to Yankees Manager Joe Girardi From Engineer to Yankees Manager Alfred Hitchcock. Charles Lindbergh. Bill Nye the Science Guy. Each started out to become a mechanical engineer but ended up making his true mark in a different field. Add New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi to this list of celebrity ex-engineers. Baseball fans have long idolized Girardi for his 15 remarkable seasons as an All-Star catcher with the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Yankees. After his playing days, he got involved in sports broadcasting and briefly managed the Florida Marlins before taking on one of the most challenging assignments in major league baseballfollowing in the footsteps of legendary Yankees manager Joe Torre. But before all that, Girardi was an aspiring industrial engineering student at Northwestern Universitys McCormick School of Engineering and Management, balancing a heavy academic load with a budding career on the diamond. In 2007, the school recognized him with its distinguished alumni award. In his award address, he explained how his academic background has contributed to his career success in baseball. You think about industrial engineers as problem solvers. In baseball, thats what you do. Situations come up all the time where you use the skills youve learned to solve problems. You figure out how to make systems run better and be more efficient, and really thats what youre trying to do as a manager, he told interviewers. As a catcher, he had to calculate a pitchers strength and a batters weakness in order to succeed. They give you so many statistics in baseball today that some players become paralyzed, but I loved it, he said. Problem-Solving in Baseball Fans and critics alike recognize Girardis knack for applying engineering-like principles of statistics and problem-solving to the execution of a ball game. Following some controversial decisions in the 2009 playoffs, the online magazine Slate dubbed him too smart for his own good. But thats not quite how Girardi sees it. I love numbers, he told the Harvard Business Review. You can never give me too many numbers. I believe they tell a story, if you have a large enough sample. However, he cautioned, If you think too much, you fail, because the game happens too quickly. The key is preparation. You tell the player, Heres the informationnow go play. The data has to become instinctual. You cant think about it in the middle of a pitch. Information-Driven Style At Northwestern, Girardi honed his numerical talents under statistics professor Ajit Tamhane. Joe has had a fantastic career, Tamhane says today. He exemplifies our talented alumni body, many of whom have gone on to pursue diverse career paths and achieved great success in their fields. But did they really leave engineering behind? Hitchcocks career was distinguished by technical genius. Lindberghs determination and problem-solving skills carried him solo across the Atlantic. Nyes communication skills help people of all ages understand complex science and engineering concepts. Girardis information-driven style helps reduce the power of serendipity over the outcome of a game. Each in his own way has advanced his profession while enriching countless lives. And isnt that what engineering is all about? Michael MacRae is an independent writer. You think about industrial engineers as problem solvers. In baseball, that's what you do. Situations come up all the time where you use the skills you’ve learned to solve problems.Joe Girardi, manager, New York Yankees

14 ways to gain confidence when youre at a new job and an introvert

14 ways to gain confidence when you're at a new job and an introvert 14 ways to gain confidence when you're at a new job and an introvert If you are an introvert, there are many aspects of life that can feel extra challenging - like gaining and communicating self-confidence  at a new job. But, it doesn’t have to be.It is completely possible for an introvert to build confidence and good positive relationships with people over time. Here’s how:1. Know that you are wired to leadSeveral years ago,  TheLadders.com, conducted a survey and learned that 65% of 1,542 senior managers believed that introversion was an impediment to getting ahead in the workplace. The belief is that managers tend to see extroverted employees who tend to be more talkative, energetic and often popular as leadership material. But, according to Professor Adam Grant from the  University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business  introverts  can be better leaders. That’s because introverts are in tune with their likes and dislikes. They know what works best for them and they use this information to create work environments that optimize their effectiveness. Maximum effectiveness is key to career success. If you are an introvert â€" let that sink in. You are wired to lead. Own it!2. Get charged before you engageThe main difference between introverts and extroverts is where they get their energy. Extroverts get their energy from engaging with other people â€" the more people they engage with the more charged up they get. On the other hand, introverts get their energy from being alone. Much like a cell phone battery, their energy gets depleted with extensive social interaction. Depending on their capacity, they will need to retreat from social interaction to recharge before they are comfortable enough to re-engage with other. If you are an introvert, make sure that you find strategic times during your day to grab some alone time to re-charge. Consider scheduling an hour of alone time before large staff meetings or  networking  events. When you are charged and re-energized you more easily engage with others. This allows you to communicate confidence more easily with your new co-workers.3. Leverage one-on-one interactionsIntroverts are often more comfortable when they connect with others one-on-one. If you’re an introvert, use this to your advantage. Set up  lunch  dates with each of the members of your team and with colleagues from other departments. Use these opportunities to get to know them on a more personal basis as well as to ask for success tips for your new role. The bottom line is when you’re in one-on-one settings you’re more comfortable and this will go a long way in communicating confidence at your new job.4. Dress for successDo you know that awesome feeling you get when you have a new outfit that looks great on you? There’s nothing like it. There is no doubt that when we look and feel our best, we communicate confidence. So always strive to look your best. It will put a pep in your step that will radiate self-confidence at your new job.5. Speak with a period at the endIn addition t o your physical appearance, how you speak will make an impression at your new job. So, if you’re an introvert who wants to communicate confidence at work, use language that projects that you are a  confident leader. Also, be mindful that the volume and tone of your voice are instrumental in conveying confidence and leadership. Don’t sound tentative when you speak. Instead, speak with a period at the end. In other words, affirmatively and with  authority. You should also limit your use of phrases like “I think” and “I feel.” If you’re in  a meeting where others are dominating the discussion, don’t always wait for everyone to  finish speaking before you chime in; you may never get the opportunity. Be ready to  politely, but firmly Interject.6. Watch your  body languageYour body language speaks loud and clear long before you open your mouth to say a word. The way you carry yourself sends strong messages about who  you are and how you feel about yourself. Your presence an d demeanor communicate  your level of self-confidence.So, watch your body language and adjust as needed in order to communicate self-confidence. You can start to communicate self-confidence by watching your  posture: hold  your chin up, shoulders back, feet 12 inches apart with your weight evenly distributed on both feet.  If you do this regularly, you will begin to feel relaxed and comfortable in your own skin; owning who you are. As you communicate self-confidence with your body language, others at your new job will begin to view you as a leader.7. Be engagingWhether you’re at a meeting or at a social event your interactions with  colleagues and key influencers will establish a foundation for your future success in your  new role. Make it a point to be engaging and genuinely interested in the person you are  talking to. You don’t need to be an extrovert to be engaging.  Dale Carnegie, a master at building relationships, said it best when he wrote the “6  ways to make people like you” in his book  How to Win Friends and Influence People: Become genuinely interested in other people Smile Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important  sound in any language Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves Talk in the terms of the other person’s interest Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely 8. Speak upAs an introvert, you are likely not prone to speaking just for the sake of speaking. This is a good thing. But, you should be prepared to speak when it matters. As the new employee on the block, always prepare before meetings. Review the agenda and consider  how you will substantively contribute to the discussion. Perhaps you will make  recommendations to a project or ask questions that will clarify a point. You may even  affirm someone else’s point of view or offer a different viewpoint. Whatever your  contribution is, be thoughtful about what you say and how you say it. In addition,  understand that using too many words can kill the effectiveness of what you’re  communicating. Use fewer words and get to the point. Remember, every word you  speak will help to build your credibility before your new peers.9. Talk about your accomplishmentsMany introverts miss out on leadership  opportunities because they are uncomfortable with self-promotion. They think that self-promoti on is bragging. But self-promoting and bragging are two different things.  Bragging is ego driven; self-promotion is accomplishment driven. Find and/or create  opportunities where you can update key stakeholders about your contribution to  successful  projects at your new job. Those early wins feed your confidence for the next win.For example, speak about your accomplishments during your  performance evaluation with your manager or at a status update meeting. You may  even find an opportunity to share in a memo that is widely distributed throughout your  organization.10. Public speakingWhile it sounds counterintuitive, public speaking is an excellent way to build confidence when you are an introvert. Find opportunities at your new job to speak at meetings, workshops, seminars, and conferences. In addition to helping you build confidence, public speaking is an important leadership skill to develop. You can join a local Toastmasters International group or work with a coach who will be able to provide you with personal individualized attention.11.  Stay positiveNew  jobs  come with new people, a new company culture and often new challenges. That’s why starting a new job can be emotionally draining for an introvert. This can ultimately impact your level of confidence. To counteract this, train yourself to see the glass as half full rather than half empty when you encounter challenges at your new job. When you find your thoughts going in a negative direction, challenge yourself to focus on the positive side of things.Ask yourself questions like:  What can I do to improve this situation? What lessons have I learned that will help me be successful in the future? How can this situation help me to help others? In addition to asking yourself these types of questions, take the time each day to write down the things you are thankful for. For example, you may be thankful for the sunset, the change in seasons, your talents, abilities, friends, etc. These exercises will he lp you to develop an attitude of gratitude and will lay the foundation for an uplifted spirit, a positive  perspective and a higher level of confidence.12. Develop a growth planIn this day and age, it is increasingly more important that  you be strategic about your leadership path. Therefore, the earlier you do this at your new job, the better. Developing a plan and a timeframe for where  you want to go and how you plan to get there. Begin by doing research. Become a  student of your industry and your new organization. Become familiar with trends and  organizational  changes.Enlist the help and advice of mentors to help pave the way. This  kind of research and planning will help you to make wiser decisions about leadership  opportunities that may become available to you in the future.  A growth plan will fuel you with a sense of purpose and confidence at your new job.13. Volunteer for “stretch” assignmentsAs a new employee and an introvert, a great way to gain confidence at a ne w job is to volunteer for a stretch assignment. So, don’t wait to be selected for a special  project; volunteer to participate in one. Speak to your manager about your goals and how you believe you can make a meaningful contribution. When an  opportunity pops up that will highlight your skills and capabilities, volunteer for it.But,  don’t just volunteer for projects that will come naturally to you. Look for opportunities  that will stretch you and help you learn new skills that will help you build your confidence. Be aware, nonetheless, that every  new opportunity is accompanied by risk. But, it’s a risk worth taking if you are ready for  the challenge.14. Celebrate your victoriesEvery victory you have at your new job will empower you and make you more confident. Relish those moments and  celebrate your victories. This article originally appeared on  Fairygodboss.

This city has the hardest working people in the United States

This city has the hardest working people in the United States This city has the hardest working people in the United States Americans are hard workers, especially compared to the rest of the world.   This is not a surprise. They put in more hours than workers in Germany, Japan, Canada and the U.K., according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. But which cities in the U.S. have people working harder than others? In order to determine which people can brag about being the busiest, WalletHub compared the 116 largest cities across nine key metrics including  employment rate, average weekly work hours, and share of workers with multiple jobs. So what was the verdict?Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? Sign up for  Morning Motivation! It’s our friendly Facebook ?   that will send you a quick note every weekday morning to help you start strong. Sign up here by clicking Get Started! If you live in a city on the West Coast or the East Coast there is a good chance you are putting more hours in than your mid-Western counterparts. The top five cities were San Francisco; Fremont, C alif; Jersey City, N.J.; Washington, DC and New York, while Columbia, S.C. finished dead last at 116th.  To see the full report go here.New Yorkers have  long hours, Alaskans long commutesNot surprisingly New Yorkers work the longest hours per week at 40.3,  which is 2.8 times longer than in Cheyenne, Wyoming, which had the shortest at 14.6.People who live in Anchorage, Alaska have to deal with a very long commute time - 41 minutes on average, or one and a half times longer than workers in Burlington, Vt., who have the shortest commute at 33.5 minutes. The work ethic is starting early with the teens of Omaha, Neb., as this city had the lowest share of idle youth (16-24 years old) at 7.1%, which is 2.6 times lower than Bakersfield, Calif. which had the highest at 18.7%.Clearly, there are some very hard working people in certain cities, but is this something to boast about? In our culture of “busy-ness syndrome,” working long hours doesn’t always mean you are the most productive . Some research shows that anything over 40 hours per week leads to less productivity  and a whole lot of fatigue. And if workers with multiple jobs are also contributing to these harder working cities just to make ends meet, that is also not the best news. Here are the top 20 hardest working cities: San Francisco, CA Fremont, CA Jersey City, NJ Washington, DC New York, NY Oakland, CA Boston, MA Aurora, CO Newark, NJ Chicago, IL San Jose, CA Los Angeles, CA Garland, TX Philadelphia, PA Baltimore, MD Long Beach, CA Plano, TX Arlington, TX Denver, CO Fort Worth, TX
