9 Alternative Career Choices to Enter After Recruitment Whether you started the role as a recruitment consultant with a longstanding career in mind or, like many people out there you fell into the role, theres no doubt that working in the field teaches you a lot of invaluable skills which can be transferred into a variety of alternative careers. Loan Officer Much like the qualification process of a candidate youll be required to extract the relevant information before approving or declining a bank loan, but more importantly- working in recruitment means youre probably well accustomed to the loan helpline. It helps to know the script of questions youll need to ask and some of the things that sales people might say to try and get a bigger overdraft during the January blues. 5. Career Counsellor Lets face it, the role of a recruiter requires much more than sending a resume to a client and counselling candidates through their career choices is part of your day to day role. Taking them through the step by step notions of their career path can be rewarding but sometimes you can leave the office feeling like youre owed a masters degree in psychology! Are you great at helping people make these decisions but youve not been hitting your sales targets? This could be the ideal role for you. 6. General Counsellor I mean why limit yourself to career counsellor? After a certain stint in recruitment you realise that, in order to place a candidate you not only need to know about their career motivations but the candidates life outside of work which can often include their husband/wife, children and any other hobbies/activities which require commitment outside of work (and thats just before the candidate gets the job). Onboarding can often require counselling through their first month/two months/rebate period and this includes ensuring that they make it through each day without quitting their job and/or having a mental breakdown. 7. HR Manager Whilst its no secret that HR managers and recruitment consultants dont always see eye to eye HR manager positions draw on a range of similar skill requirements. To be successful in an HR role requires good organisational skills, effective planning and communication. Some HR roles also require some internal recruitment day to day which makes it an obvious choice for some people. 8. Real Estate Agent Many of the roles and responsibilities of an estate agent are extremely similar to a recruitment consultant. Its unlikely (as many of us know) that there is the perfect house within your budget when you go to market and an estate agent is required to flex a customers specification and negotiate from both sides of the fence. The negatives include: long days and cold calling, sound familiar? If you fancy a change of scenery or have always had a keen interest in property then there are a lot of transferable skills. This aside if you struggle to make it to work on a Monday you can swap them in for a Saturday if you become an estate agent! Failing all of the above you only live once 9. This can make an upcoming holiday party a bit of a daunting challenge. Weâve given you the low down on mistakes you should avoid during your holiday party, and now weâre going to prep you with the tips you need to make this an office party to rememberâ"for the right reasons. Limit Your Drinks While a holiday party is a fun time to let loose, donât take that theme too liberally. Getting a little too friendly with the drink table could have you hurting in more ways than one in the morning: you donât want to blurt out some office drama you werenât even supposed to know about or make a fool of yourself in front of one your companyâs higher ups. Give yourself a drink limit and stick to it. A good general rule of thumb is three glasses of wine or the equivalent over the course of the evening, chased with plenty of water. The One Thing You Need to Make Your Dream a Reality I donât know what to do next. I canât even imagine where Iâll be in 10 years. When people ask me what I want for my future, I go blank. Sound familiar? It happens to the best of us. We canât see our future. We arenât confident in our next step. We are at a loss. This happens to everyone at some point. For those that have otherwise been on a clear path of achievement, itâs the hardest to grapple with. Things have come so clearly up until now what happened? First, even knowing that you have a problem is a HUGE step, so congrats! Nothing will change without awareness. While awareness of the issue is great, an understanding of what the issue is will lead to the clarity you need on how to fix it. When you donât know whatâs next and canât see your future, you need to know whatâs missing. Is it the dream or the mission? The One Thing You Need to Make Your Dream a Reality The Power of Dreams Dreams are WONDERFUL, arenât they? I often sit and daydream about where my future might take me, the type of life Iâm building, and exactly that moment when Iâll know Iâm actually going to get there. Itâs fun. I can see my house, what Iâm wearing, the big smile on my face, and I can actually feel that excitement in my body as I dream. That feeling is an important part of a dream. Try this: Imagine youâre sucking on a lemon right now. Just a lemon wedge straight in your mouth. No sugar, no salt, no tequila (thank god!). What happened? Chances are, the back of your mouth started to pucker (mine is as Iâm writing this!), you started to salivate, and you had to swallow a few times to get the sour âtasteâ out of your mouth. Thatâs because our body reacts to imaginary thoughts in the same way it does to reality. Thatâs right. Our body doesnât know whatâs real and whatâs fake. Crazy. This is good and bad news. The bad news is that when your head is clouded with negative, self-defeating thoughts (like, thereâs no way Iâll get this right, or everything is going to go wrong), your nervous system reacts with unnecessary stress. But the good news is, we can hack it! So, when you dream and I mean really dream and imagine yourself in your ideal job, future, emotional state, house you name it your body reacts in a positive way! And that reaction is setting a biological footprint in your nervous system as a destination. I know this may sound woo-wooey, but consider why so many athletes visualize before a performance. Science has concluded that the same parts of the brain that light up when something is actually happening light up when you imagine it. The brain is a big hurdle, so this gets you one step closer to achieving your dreams! But beyond physiological âpractice,â dreams also provide direction. The first session I ever had with a coach, she asked me where I wanted to be in 10 years. I had a very specific vision that I outlined for her without much thought and it absolutely shocked her. It turns out, most people donât know what they want in life! Without knowing what you want and where you want to land, how do you know what to do now? You have no direction. This is a big problem with people these days, and dreaming can alleviate that if youâre able to get specific about it. If dreams are so great, why do you need to do anything else? Turns out, there are limitations⦠[RELATED: How I Found the Courage to Leave My 6-Figure Job to Chase a Dream] The Limitations of Dreams âIt does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.â â" JK Rowling While dreams are great at providing direction and clarifying what you want out of life, they provide little energy. And while society is in a place right now where people feel brave enough to dream big, I see a lot of people with big dreams flounder and eventually give up. Why? They have no mission. A mission versus a dream gives you drive and energy. A mission is action-oriented; itâs the how behind the what of your dream. The mission makes the dream a reality. If you stop at the dream, youll leave yourself with only a dream. If you continue on to develop your mission, youâll make that dream a reality. A good mission statement is practical, drives your actions, and helps you make decisions that will help you achieve your dreams. It should incorporate your values (the rules and principles youâve decided to live by) and the impact you want to make in your life. While the dream is about the future, the mission focuses on what you will do today to achieve that dream. How to Have Both Hopefully, itâs clear why you need both. A mission with no dream leads to a flurry of unfocused action. A dream with no mission will always be a dream. If you can see your future clearly but arenât sure how to get there, you need to develop a mission statement. While thereâs no right way to do this, your mission statement should follow these rules: Align with your values Be action oriented Be the meter by which you gauge how to act Drive toward your dream Be concise, simple, and focused If youâre having a hard time articulating the future you want, do something you love to do and that makes you feel most like yourself to get you in the right mindset for dreaming. It could be a great workout, spending time with friends, or losing yourself in a good book. Whatever reminds you of who you are and what you want most in your life. If you spend all your time dreaming without the right mindset or worried about what you âshouldâ be focused on, your dreams will fall flat and wonât support you for long. Finding the right dream and mission takes some upfront work, for sure. But once youâve nailed it, youâll find more freedom than keeping yourself in constant indecision. When the mission is designed to drive toward your dream, youâll have the confidence to just follow the mission, knowing itâs leading you to a future thatâs meaningful to you.

Also, The Conference Board of Canada has put together some interesting charts and dashboards that validates this idea further.However that $25000 is not an absolute difference. It varies during the lifetime of the graduate. The income difference is lowest immediately after graduation, however, the difference improves significantly Letâs continue the discussion of money i.e. higher income. The higher your income, the higher your taxes. Most countries have some type of tax system. And the taxes that are collected are used for building roads, schools, providing public society, etc. Thatâs how taxation works.If a university graduate is earning more money over his/her lifetime-then this directly corresponds to higher taxes. In my opinion, that is a direct contribution to society.I donât know what your stance is- but I am totally OK with paying taxes. In fact, I have read that the countries that collect more taxes provide a higher quality of lives for their citizens- Sweden, Denmark, Canada, etc. I recommend you check this article out for more data about the relation between Taxes and Quality of Life.According to a study completed by the American College Board, Graduates donat e more blood; they are more likely to vote and they are more tolerant. They also volunteer more than non-graduates.evalIn other studies, it has proven that there is a correlation between the crime rate and lack of higher education. In a nutshell, the more likely someone obtains a higher education, the more the likelihood that they will state out of prison.4)Health BenefitsAccording to a study conducted by the University of Notre Dame, college graduates experience more health benefits than non-grads. A startling finding from that study was that the mortality rates for high-school graduates were more than twice that of college and university graduates.In another study, it was found that non-graduates are at a higher risk of afflicting Diabetes than college graduates. There is also a higher tendency of smoking among non-graduates high school graduates to smoke as opposed to college university graduates.More studies have proven that 56% of Graduates get more career satisfaction as opp osed to just over 30% with a high school diploma. And higher career satisfaction corresponds to lower stress and lower mental health issues.In summary, we have looked at various studies facts that support the notion that obtaining a Higher Education (College Degree or University Degree) provides more benefits to the individual â" Higher Income, Higher Career Satisfaction, Better Health Benefits, etc.The benefits to society are also improved significantly â" lower healthcare costs, lower crime rates, and more taxes.In the next article, we will discuss the other side of the coin â" the demerits/disadvantages of a Higher Education. Creating a Network from Scratch Heres the thing, you have been networking all along, you just didnt call it that. Take the focus off of job search and youll feel better about networking. The Harvard Business Review (dont I feel cool for reading this), has a great piece on how leaders create networks. How Leaders Create and Use Networks.(oldie but a goodie) The idea behind this brief is that there are 3 different types of networks: Personal: people outside of your company who can assist in your professional development Operations: those you need to complete tasks or accomplish work Strategic: people (not direct reports) who can help you reach company goals/objectives I love this idea because it provides a structure and plan for moving forward. Instead of meeting all kinds of people with no purpose or reason, you know why you want to meet someone. This fosters a life-time comittment to the notion of networking. There was post on Keppie Careers about not networking like a bumper car! Great analogy and a good lesson in it. My friend, Mike Lally posted on the topic of social networking. Mike has been a long time user of LinkedIn and he uses it with a purpose. He knows who he wants to Link in with and WHY! You cant fight it, learn to develop your extroverted side. Learn to love meeting new people!

Know your career purpose and get to the heart of fulfillment! I was working with my career coaching client, Sara, last week and we were talking about developing her career purpose and mission statement. Have you written one yet? If not, you need to! Doing this exercise will get you straight to the heart of what would be most fulfilling to you in a career. In our career workbook we have several exercises to help you get to this, and it takes some time and thought for our clients to figure it out. One way you can get started on it however, is to ask yourself, âWhat you want your career to be about, long term?â At the end of your life what would you want to be able to say about your career? That you helped people in some way, had a certain impact on the economy, or maybe something else? Just imagine youre writing your biography. Looking back, what would be most meaningful to you? Just brainstorm, write down whatever comes to mind first, and see what pops up. Ideal Career Coach
